One final set of statistics for 2013 - top age group times from Ironman races this season.
What better way to finish a year of Ironman statistics than with more Ironman statistics? Namely a look at some of the top times – I am carefully avoiding the word performances here – over the last year of races. Sure, I did something similar back in October, during the run up to Kona, but it’s the end of the year and the Internet loves lists. OK, the fastest times don’t tell us much (although they’re great for the people on the lists) as course and conditions are hugely influential. As I said the Internet loves lists.
Which is good as I have a stack of them. As well as the top 10 male and female age group times in each discipline I’ve also provided PDFs containing pro times and individual age groups as well. You’ll find them at the end of this post.
The lists were easier to compile this year – I’ve become much better at cleaning and managing Ironman data. However errors may still slip in. Not only do course and conditions vary between races, but so does the quality of the timing data and it may just be that the apparent über biker simply missed a timing mat. I’ve tried hard to spot these.
That isn’t the only editorial decision I’ve made: I’ve excluded Ironman Melbourne and Cozumel as their shortened swims resulted in unusually fast times. As a result both dominate the swim tables and, in the case of Melbourne, the fastest finishers. So I have chosen to exclude many of the fastest times from these lists of the fastest times. Perhaps I could have adjusted the results for the shortened courses, but then the discussion we’d be having would be whether the adjustments were fair. I kept it simple. I apologise to the – predominantly – Australians and Americans who raced well at either event. I don’t particularly like making arbitrary editorial decisions like these so I’ve also included a version of the PDF incorporating all results below.
On to the lists themselves.

If you’ve made it this far and you really like detail then you’ll want to look at the complete set of lists in one of the two PDFs linked below. They contain top tens for each individual age groups and the pros.
These are the fastest times seen at WTC Ironman races in 2013. The best performances are an entirely different matter. Some races, and race days, are – relatively speaking – easier than others and an 8:45 at Ironman A may not be the equivalent of an 8:45 at Ironman B. That said any age group athlete racing an 8:45 at an Ironman is going to be up their in terms of performance. Exact ranking is open to debate, but what we see here is a collection of the fastest swimmers, cyclists and runners in amateur Ironman triathlon.
