Ironman Louisville is one of two remaining qualifications opportunities for the 2014 Ironman World Championship. There are 50 Kona slots on offer, should you qualify you’ll have less than 2 months to recover and prepare for the World Championships. As a race Ironman Louisville shows similar patterns to the majority of North American races, just trending a little slower than the average.
More detailed statistics for individual age groups are available to download at the bottom of this article.
It’s really on the run where we see clear differences between results at Louisville and the broader averages from other North American races. In swim and bike while there is variation it’s small and insignificant; the run, however, is distinctly slower across the majority of age groups.
The split distributions from Louisville are incredibly similar to those from the 2013 US Ironman Series. Again all we can really note is the shift in run (and subsequently overall) times at Ironman Louisville.

The above estimates for Kona slot allocation at Louisville are based on the bib list available at the Ironman website, actual numbers will vary. Perhaps the only point of note is the dip in numbers for the M35-39 age group, otherwise it’s the standard pattern for most Ironman races.
Even the top twenty charts for Louisville are consistent. Age groups trends, the drop off from first through tenth to twentieth, are all very similar. Naturally there is yearly variation and you can’t be certain of qualification times, but the level of competition in the age group field appears to have remained largely the same. As a slightly slower course most male age groups should only need a dip under 10 hours to qualify; for the women it’s likely around the 11:30 mark that they’ll need to beat.

A full analysis of the results will follow the weekend’s race. My expectations are that results will fall very close to previous years.
